LA Rights Explained publishes plain-English guides to California law on workers’ rights, injuries, and consumer protection. Our goal is to help everyday Californians understand their rights and where to get help. This site is for general education only and does not offer legal services or legal advice.
Why this site exists
Most people learn their rights only after something goes wrong: a paycheck comes up short, a crash upends a week, a car keeps going back to the shop, or a collector won’t stop calling. LA Rights Explained offers plain-English explanations of everyday California law, so you can recognize a problem early and know your options and deadlines.
What you’ll find here
- Work: wages, overtime, breaks, final pay, independent-contractor status, and retaliation.
- On the road: what to do after a car accident, injury deadlines, and how fault is shared.
- As a consumer: California’s lemon law, debt collection rights, and related protections.
New articles are published weekly, with periodic updates when California law changes.
What this site is not
This site is for general education. It is not legal advice, it is not a law firm, and it does not solicit cases. Reading this site or commenting does not create an attorney-client relationship. Please don’t send confidential or sensitive information through comments, email, or social media. The views here do not represent any employer or client.
How posts are researched
Each article is based on primary sources, mainly California statutes and published court decisions, which are cited in the text. Each post shows a “Last reviewed” date. Laws change, so always check the current rules for your situation. If you spot an error, let us know and we will review it and correct it.
Finding help
If you need help with a specific problem, these resources are a good place to start:
- California Labor Commissioner (DLSE): wage claims and retaliation complaints
- California Civil Rights Department: discrimination, harassment, and related retaliation
- Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI): debt collector licensing and complaints
- Consumer Financial Protection Bureau: debt collection and credit reporting complaints
- Department of Consumer Affairs: Lemon Law
- LA County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service (SmartLaw)
- LawHelpCA: free and low-cost legal aid directory
This site is general information about California law, not legal advice. Reading it doesn’t create an attorney-client relationship. Every situation is different, so talk to a licensed California attorney about yours.
